Teaching about Earth's history is a challenge for all teachers. Time factors of millions and billions of years is difficult even for adults to comprehend. However, "relative" dating or time can be an easy concept for students to learn. Once they are able to manipulate the cards into the correct sequence, they are asked to do a similar sequencing activity using fossil pictures printed on "rock layer" cards. Sequencing the rock layers will show students how paleontologists use fossils to give relative dates to rock strata. Once students begin to grasp "relative" dating, they can extend their knowledge of geologic time by exploring radiometric dating and developing a timeline of Earth's history. These major concepts are part of the Denver Earth Science Project's "Paleontology and Dinosaurs" module written for students in grades
Both parts of the activity can be completed in one class period. MS-ESS Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth's 4. Examples can include the formation of mountain chains and ocean basins, the evolution or extinction of particular living organisms, or significant volcanic eruptions. Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include recalling the names of specific periods or epochs and events within them.
This resource is explicitly designed to build towards this performance expectation.
Teachers should note that the stratigraphic information provided for the second part of the activity is purely hypothetical; however, this is still a valuable exercise since its successful completion will allow teachers to initiate a discussion on the Law of Superposition and index fossils without overwhelming students with too many details.
In particular, these activities allow students to explore the portion of the Clarification Statement dealing with the evolution or extinction of particular living organisms by pinpointing when specific fossils appear and disappear in the strata record.
This resource is explicitly designed to build towards this science and engineering practice. Comments about Including the Science and Engineering Practice In this activity, students are tasked with constructing a timeline using fossils.
In order to align this activity more closely to this practice, teachers should require students to explain and justify each step of their timeline.
For example, students should discuss which fossils are making their first appearance in a particular segment and which fossils have disappeared. In addition, students should discuss which, if any, of the fossils in a particular segment could be utilized as an index fossil.
Comments about Including the Disciplinary Core Idea The disciplinary core idea is illustrated by a simulation of a fossil dig and the fossils found in each site correlated to an age of the substrate this activity is clearly an investigation of rocks and fossils. This activity does not address any water patterns in each of the simulated dig sites and the ancient land would relate loosely to the layers in the simulated dig site.
Only the age of the rock layers and the Law of Superposition are addressed in this activity. After this simulation have the students complete a lesson related what they have learned about the ages of the rocks and fossils, but adding in plate motions. This resource is explicitly designed to build towards this crosscutting concept.

However, "relative" dating or time can be an easy concept for students to learn. In this activity, students begin a sequencing activity with familiar items The Data tables on the worksheet are a nice way to organize the fossils VS time period. The data shows a numerical relationship to the age of the rocks. Another numerical relationship is having the students use a method called radiometric dating to calculate the absolute age of the rock. Resource Quality. Alignment to the Dimensions of the NGSS. A Relative Dating Activity is a hands on exercise which introduces students to the concepts of sequencing and using fossils to establish relative dates for rock strata. In the first part of the activity, students are asked to sequence cards by identifying and ordering overlapping letters found on the cards.

In this activity, students gain a better understanding of radioactive dating and half-lives. Students use M&Ms to demonstrate the idea of radioactive decay. Each group begins with M&Ms in a container. Parent isotopes are represented by the M side up (radioactive). Daughter isotopes are represented by the M side down (stable). I have typically used this lesson after I have introduced fossils and the principle of superposition.
In this activity, students will put what they have learned about the rules of stratigraphy and relative dating to work. You students will create a 3D block model of a section of the Earth's crust and then analyze it to sequence the layers and events in the model.
